If you already have an address in Austria and an Austrian or other European bank account (or know someone who has that and entitles you to use it) you can get our Student Health Insurance (Basic or Plus) right away.
--> Student Health Insurance
You can order fully online and get the insurance confirmation within 1 working day via e-mail.
Please note: The start date of the insurance can be the current month and max. 3 months in the future. (So for example in March - you can select "March", "April", "May" or "June")
If you would enter Austria / need the insurance later than the 3 months in the future - but still need to prove the insurance for the residence permit application, you would do the following:
1) Get our Travel Insurance PLUS for 1 month from the earliest date you would enter Austria. This Travel Insurance comes with a confirmation that you will get the proper long-term health insurance as a next step and will be accepted for the initial residence permit application.
--> Travel Insurance Plus
2) Before the Travel Insurance ends, you would get the full Student Health Insurance.
--> Student Health Insurance
Academics
If you can enter Austria visa-free or with C-visa or D-visa you would get our Academic Insurance as soon as you have an address in Austria and an Austrian or other European bank account. This is the insurance that will be requested / accepted for your residence permit as a student in Austria.
--> Academic Insurance
2) Academic Insurance requires an Austrian or other European bank account. The money is taken from the account each month automatically. After applying for the insurance, there is a short phone-health-interview with a doctor to confirm the health status. After the interview you get the final paperwork to be signed.
If you want to insure yourself for the days that you will be in Austria before you have the bank account / the Student Health Insurance starts, you can buy our Travel Insurance Basic.
You can select the specific start day and end day. You pay €2,40/day.
Payment is done via credit card.
--> Travel Insurance Basic

Please note:
About the timing for the travel insurance:
When should it start and and for how long should you get it?
It depends on how well you have planned everything already. You need to be insured from the moment you land in Austria until you have the long-term insurance So we recommend to take some days buffer so you can for example be more flexible to find the best and cheapest flight. We recommend to get it for at least 1 month - 2 months to be on the safe side and be more flexible.
The health insurance always starts with the 1st of a month so please make sure to time the travel insurance so that there is no gap or insurance-overlap.

Travel Basic and/or Academic
If you are planning to stay in Austria for less than 6 months (so under D-visa; not applying for the residence permit) you have two main options (and a mixed option)
1) Travel Insurance Basic
2) Academic Insurance
The difference between the options:
1) Travel Insurance is paid via credit card and you select a specific start and end day. The insurance automatically ends on the last day and does not have to be cancelled. The money is paid in full ahead of time. The Travel Insurance provides a basic coverage for accidents and emergencies
2) Academic Insurance requires an Austrian or other European bank account. The money is taken from the account each month automatically. After applying for the insurance, there is a short phone-health-interview with a doctor to confirm the health status. After the interview you get the final paperwork to be signed.
The insurance has to be actively cancelled when you lave the country at: Cancel Insurance.
The Academic Insurance is an all-risk health insurance and provides extensive coverage for all medically necessary treatments
So the difference between the two options is the convenience & price (Travel Insurance) vs. the coverage (Health Insurance)
FeelSafe Recommendation: We strongly recommend to take the Academic Insurance for better coverage.
Mixed option:
If you don't have a bank account, you can take the Travel Insurance of 1 month, enter Austria, open an account and get the Academic Insurance for the rest of the months.

For the student health insurance you need to have an Austrian or other SEPA bank account. If you don't have an account yet (and don't know anyone that has an account that you are entitled to use until you have your own account) there is a 3-Step process as a work-around with our Travel Insurance Plus (paid via credit card) that is also FULLY ACCEPTED for the initial residence permit application in your home-country at the Austrian embassy.
